Ōyama-en
A moment to unwind in the city.
At Ōyama-en in Oyama-cho, Itabashi Ward, enjoy house-specialty shaved ice infused with whole tea leaves such as Uji Kintoki and hojicha, alongside sencha sets, herbal green teas, and matcha parfaits at the counter.
01 / ABOUT THE PLACE
Slide a spoon into the shaved ice at Ōyama-en, and the deep aroma and delicate bitterness of Japanese tea rise not just from the syrup, but from the shaved ice itself. Located near Oyama Station on the Tobu Tojo Line, this tea shop is well regarded for freezing tea directly into its ice blocks before shaving. The classic Uji Kintoki retains its richness even as it melts, allowing guests to tailor the sweetness using the accompanying matcha syrup right down to the final spoonful. Additional chilled treats include the roasty hojicha shaved ice and a fruit-forward strawberry shaved ice.
Behind the retail tea shelves lies a quiet counter where guests can linger over the shop's specialist teas. Sencha tasting sets showcase distinct single-variety profiles such as Uruoi, Asatsuyu, Saemidori, and Ofukucha, each paired with a small confection to highlight nuances of astringency and natural sweetness. Freshly whisked matcha sets and toasted mochi provide an equally restorative pause.
The cafe selection also extends to indulgent green tea creations, including a decadent matcha parfait, matcha soft serve, and gently sweetened matcha and hojicha lattes crafted to keep the roasted or grassy tea character front and center. For something lighter or caffeine-free, the menu features herbal infusions such as hojicha with peppermint, sencha with lemongrass, roasted brown rice tea with green rooibos, and black soybean tea. It makes a calming spot to step off the covered shopping arcade and refresh with a fragrant cup.
